Liberty Protection Safeguards

Generally speaking a person who has capacity to make decisions, must be consulted regarding their treatment etc.

However, some service users or patients lack the mental capacity to fully understand some things – which means that they don’t have the capacity to give their full consent and so it may be necessary to deprive them of their freedom to choose and make decisions for themselves.  This poses some obvious risks and so the Liberty Protection Safeguards were introduced to protect particularly vulnerable people.

This course is useful whether LPS is part of your work, or you simply want to better understand the process.

Liberty Protection Safeguards Course Content

1. The first section will give learners an in-depth overview of the Liberty Protection Safeguards, why they exist, and their importance.
2. In the final section we look at the terminology around LPS, explore certain areas of the process such as referrals and consultations, look at three assessments and the pre-authorisation review.

Test & Certificate

There will be one or two questions in between sections which are designed to reinforce learning and ensure maximum engagement but do not count towards the final test. This test usually has around 20 multiple choice questions and when passed, a printable certificate can be downloaded.
