Asbestos Awareness (UKATA Approved) Full & Refresher Courses

This course is approved by UKATA (the UK Asbestos Training Association) which is fast becoming the ‘normal’ requirement for many large main Contractors and Clients.

UKATA regulate the course and so it cannot form part of an Learning Management System. It also has a 15 question test of which 11 must be answered correctly in order to pass.

Duration for the Full course is a minimum of 2.5 hours and for the refresher approx. 90 minutes.  The latter can be done by anyone who has passed the Full Course within the previous 18 months (not 12 as it will say on their certificate).
Course costs start at £23, reducing for larger orders but they cannot be purchased through this site.
For CITB Registered companies, there is a £60 Grant for this training (if eligible).

Asbestos Awareness – The Law

There are only a few Health & Safety Regulations that require specific training with penalties if it is not done. One of these is Asbestos Awareness which is set out in the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 which also defines what has to be covered.
Anyone who may be likely to be exposed to asbestos at work (i.e. works on a building built prior to 2000) must have the training required by Regulation 10.  According to the HSE Code of Practice, this includes:

• ​Site operatives in construction, maintenance, refurbishment or demolition
• Electricians, plumbers and gas fitters and HVAC Engineers
• Painters and decorators
• Plasterers, shop-fitters and roofers
• Telecoms and computer engineers and cabling installers
• Fire, security and burglar alarm engineers
• Architects, surveyors, project managers and other such professions

Every employer must ensure that anyone who is employed by, or labour only sub-contractors under their control, has the training and that it is refreshed annually. Refreshers can be given by various means, not just repeating the initial training.

Asbestos Awareness Course Content

• The properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for those exposed to asbestos who smoke;
• The types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and asbestos containing materials in buildings and plant;
• The general procedures to be followed to deal with an emergency, e.g. an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace;
• How to avoid the risks from asbestos, e.g. for building work, no employee should carry out work which disturbs the fabric of a building unless the employer has confirmed that asbestos containing materials are not present.
• A learner is required to achieve a score of at least 12 out of 15 questions to be successful.

Test & Certificate

There will be one or two questions in between sections which are designed to reinforce learning and ensure maximum engagement but do not count towards the final test. This test usually has around 20 multiple choice questions and when passed, a printable certificate can be downloaded.
