Medication Awareness for Education

Duration: 40 Minutes

To administer medication in educational establishments, a person needs to have training to do so safely – this course should give a person the knowledge to do so.

The use of medication in schools and colleges is a vital part of the safety regime. The course provides an overview of the relevant legislation appertaining to staff and Governors, the responsibilities and the risks involved in not doing it correctly, and how to read pharmacist’s labels, delivery, storage and disposal of medication, effectively managing doses and assisting with a person who self-medicates.

Medication Awareness for Education Course Contents

1 Legal Responsibilities & Policies

This section sets the foundations of medication administration in schools and colleges, covering legal responsibilities for Governors, teaching staff and parents.  It then looks at what an educational establishment should include in its policy on the subject.

2 Medication

This section covers the medication itself and looks at the different categories of medication, how to calculate dosages, how to read prescription labels and how to safely store and dispose of medication.

 3 Processes and Procedures

This section covers processes, both the legal and best-practice processes that need to be considered when giving medication to a student in an educational establishment. It looks at how to look after people who self-medicate, what to do if you have to administer medication covertly and how to manage emergency medication.

4 Administering Medication

The last section goes into more detail about how to administer medication to students with diabetes, eczema, asthma and severe allergies.

Test & Certificate

There will be one or two questions in between sections which are designed to reinforce learning and ensure maximum engagement but do not count towards the final test. This test usually has around 20 multiple choice questions and when passed, a printable certificate can be downloaded.
