About us

Although our services only started in 1997, the training and development experience of our key personnel spans 40 years. Supporting them is a team of specialists who are well versed in both training and administration for a variety of industries

Unlike many training organisations who offer a management service which is really designed to assist it in selling its courses, Helmsman - and you - benefit from the fact that training management is our specialty – we don’t do training!

The Managing Director is Tony Willson who, for many years, ran several small businesses then spent 10 years with the international Dale Carnegie Training organisation. He qualified as an instructor in most of their programmes and his main responsibility was advising clients on ‘people’ related matters. Since 1998, he has helped many construction companies and house-builders with their approach to training and development, IiP and general people-related matters. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management and a qualified Investors in People adviser.


Lindsey Willson is our Operations Director. She was an IT trainer with various companies for many years before starting this business. She developed our unique software package strictly for the purpose of administering all aspects of training, from receipt of the needs through to evaluation and then integrated it to deal with construction industry Training Grant claims.


Maureen Knight is the Director responsible for the Health & Safety Services side of the business. Her background is in sales for financial services and utilities and for 5 years, managing another Health & Safety training company.



Nicky Garrett is the Director responsible for the Outsourced Training Management side of the business and, as such, she has an unrivalled knowledge of training administration and her personal expertise is on Construction Industry matters.



Every individual contributes specialist skills

Our staff and associates consist of a range of consultants, trainers, speakers, strategic partners and suppliers covering every aspect of our business. Each consultant, trainer or training supplier that we use undergoes a strict vetting procedure, and every course is carefully evaluated to ensure that it meets the clients’ needs. We also carry Professional Indemnity Insurance up to £2 million
